A typical Anganwadi centre provides basic health care in Indian villages. It is a part of the Indian public health care system. Basic health care activities include contraceptive counselling and supply, nutrition education and supplementation, as well as pre-school activities. The centres may be used as depots for oral rehydration salts, basic medicines and contraceptives. These centres provide supplementary nutrition, non-formal pre-school education, nutrition and health education, immunization, health check-up and referral services of which later three services are provided in convergence with public health systems. Anganwadi centres were established across India in 1966 and from then onwards functioning without interruption.
At present Anganwadi centres have become havens for corruption as low level staff members are selling the freely given food items in open market without giving them to children. Visakhapatnam joint collector G Srijana held a review meeting with CDPOs, Anganwadi supervisors and workers at zilla parishat conference hall. ICDS PD Chinmayee Devi, EPDCL superintending engineer T V Surya Prakash, RWS SE V Ravi Kumar, Panchayat Raj SE Venu Gopal, district panchayat officer B Krishna Kumari, zilla parishat deputy chief executive officer Srinivas Rao, CDPOs and Anganwadi supervisors have participated in the meeting.
‘Even after government has sanctioned permanent buildings for Anganwadi centres, the staff members are not bothered to select sites for construction’ said G Srijana. CDPOs should identify government lands and send proposals. Eggs meant for serving kids are being sold in open market and why CDPOs are not taking action against the culprits, if it repeats they will be punished at first. Supervisors should send the details of application regarding electric connection tap connection or bore well digging details immediately to district head quarters. Drinking water and toilets must be provided at all centres and cooking utensils should be sent to 8 Anganwadi centres which is pending, she added.
