“Vizag not viable as railway zonal headquarters “Sujana Chowdary says vizag can no more become railway zonal headquarters Minister of state for science and technology Y Sujana Chowdary on Thursday said that the demand in Andhra Pradesh for a separate rail zone, with its headquarters at Visakhapatnam, was not viable.
But still he said people not to lose hope. At press meet at Andhra University, he said that the demand for a separate zone was unlikely to search out a mention within the coming Budget with a quotation “We are confident that the promise will be fulfilled. We are trying our best. We are confident that it will be set up here “.
This, despite the fact that Andhra Pradesh was allocated Rs 3,406 crore for railway projects, against the last two years’ average of Rs 2,195 crore.
The demand for a separate zone is still a dream to come true, it is related with protests for granting ‘Special Status’ to Andhra Pradesh. Many along Andhra’s northern coast have reiterated the demand. The people of north coastal Andhra were exposed beacuse of Protests took place in Visakhapatnam last year after the presentation of the Railway Budget, with CPM activists alleging that the BJP-led NDA Government.
The formation of the zone was mentioned in the AP Reorganisation Act – 2014 and was promised both by the UPA and the BJP. But during the past three years it has made no headway with no clear-cut assurance from the Centre. The zone has become a major emotive issue for the people of Visakhapatnam and the north coastal AP as development and employment hinge on it.
